DESCRIPTION

  • “Letting the imagination run free is not a flight into the unreal, it is not escapism; it is instead the expression of boldness and inventiveness.”
    Eugène Ionesco

Based on the Hermès theme for 2009, “The Great Escape”, the craftsmen and designers of La Montre Hermès have given free rein to their creativity. They invite us to travel to a place where horological emotions meet and mingle with technical virtuosity, guided by the relentless pursuit of innovation and a perpetual quest for excellence that merge to create a smooth and harmonious inventive flow. With the heart as a driving force and the hand to guide their imagination, they freely interpret a theme that resonates like a challenge to push the boundaries of existing skills, opening up unexplored vistas for the tradition in perpetual motion that binds their artistic crafts together in a same community of spirit. The nimble gestures of leather craftsmen, watchmaker and enamelled artists have shaped the dreams of “The Great Escape” by the Maison Hermès, devoting countless hours to reaching that magical point where technical complexity gives way to essentials: sheer beauty and that perfect moment in time.

Time… the intimate and indispensable companion of travellers and craftsmen. Infinitely variable and endowed with an elastic nature that expands or contracts according to the feelings by which we measure it. Time that glides by in flowing and classically elegant seconds, as on the dial of the Arceau chronograph, as smoothly as the stride of a sorrel thoroughbred horse. Time that dictates the eternal cycle of the moon with astronomical precision and, secured by a saddle leather strap, gives the owner of the Arceau Pocket moon phases watch the sense of actually holding its elusive self in the palm of his hand. Time interpreted by the delicate strokes of the artist’s brush creating the mesmerising depths of the grand feu enamelled painting on the Cape Cod “Galloping H”. And finally, time that pauses for an 8-day stop-over, captivated by the crystal sphere of a boule clock and the inner journey of the hands punctuating the mysterious dance of the hours.

Exceptional timepieces, representing a series of “great escapes” to the very core of the art of time and the spirit of the House. Through their nobility of their materials, their emblematic lines, the impressive performances of their calibres and the refinement of their finishing, these objects of genuine passion and emotion contribute to establishing the fact that in the world of Hermès as in that of Haute Horlogerie, dreams represent the true victory over time.

    CAPE COD

The source of inspiration for this range is forcefully self-evident: Cape Cod and its gentle pace of life, the freedom of the wind and the power of the ocean. The curved case echoes the roundness of the lugs inspired by the links of an “anchor chain” bracelet. The characteristic numerals appear to be polished by the elements. Meticulous expertise has been lavished on polishing the leather straps. Each Cape Cod model combines impressive evocative power and peerless horological craftsmanship.

Cape Cod “H au Galop” grand feu enamel

Inseparably entwined with the destiny of many exceptional watches, grand feu enamelling confers unique light and beauty on the dial of the Cape Cod “H au Galop”. Inspired by a Hermès silk scarf created by Bali Barret, its daring and subtle graphic design, entirely hand-crafted using traditional miniature painting techniques, pays vibrant tribute to the complexity of this time-honoured artistic craft. By nature an incredibly demanding material, enamel is interpreted here through vivid colours and exquisite geometrical motifs, endowing this model with exceptional depth and an unmistakably contemporary touch. This miniature painting was executed for Hermès by Anita Porchet, a Swiss artist known for her mastery of grand feu enamelling. This extremely delicate technique consists in using a fine brush to apply thin layers of enamel to the dial, which is fired in the oven at a temperature of over 800° Celsius after each stage, in order to vitrify the enamel and fix the colours. Beating at the heart of a generous white gold case, the mechanical self-winding H1928 movement provides a panoramic view of the intricate workings of its 186 hand-finished parts. The gold oscillating weight and bridges adorned with the sprinkled “H” motif, along with the circular-grained mainplate, bevelled and polished screws and steel parts, are matched by the refined architecture of the dial on the Cape Cod “H au Galop” grand feu enamel watch. A matt alligator leather strap fitted with a white gold folding clasp and signature saddle stitching confers the finishing touch on this “great escape” to the world of artistic craftsmanship. The Cape Cod “H au Galop” grand feu enamel watch is issued as four one-of-a-kind creations distinguished by their differing dial colours: pepper red, golden yellow, cobalt blue and black/white.
