DESCRIPTION

  • Les Voyages Extraordinaires

« Jules Verne’s invitations to dream have become part of the identity of Van Cleef & Arpels. We love dreams, we love fairies, and Jules Verne takes us beyond our dreams, beyond our limitations ».

Stanislas de Quercize, President and CEO, Van Cleef & Arpels

Escape! Explore! Go in pairs or go alone! The «Voyage» represents one of the dimensions in which time is expressed in the most magical way. At SIHH 2011, Van Cleef & Arpels invites you to escape from reality by opening up a precious wooden cabinet. Inside are the keys to your journey.

Its lid is decorated by a world map created with inlays of different woods outlining the five continents, the seas, the oceans and the huge ice caps. Four portholes fitted with a magnifying glass offer a glimpse of what awaits inside. This is the moment when the journey begins.

Your guide is Jules Verne, one of the greatest French writers of the late 19th century. His work is infused with the idea of escape, exploration and the unknown. Inside the cabinet are four watches, each directly inspired by one of the books in his beautiful series «Les Voyages Extraordinaires».

These timepieces make up a very special High Watchmaking cabinet, a continuation of the adventure that started in September 2010 with the presentation of the High Jewellery collection, «Les Voyages Extraordinaires».

    The four Voyages Extraordinaires

« In drawing on the novels of Jules Verne for inspiration we wished to open our workshops to a view of a wider universe. This enables us to explore creative sources that are different from those that come from the world of High Jewellery, while still retaining total freedom of expression. »

Nicolas Bos, Vice President and Director of Creation, Van Cleef & Arpels

    Midnight Les 4 Voyages
Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea

The eye slowly descends from the shimmering blue at the surface of the water to the dark blue in the sombre depths. A man in a diving suit is exploring the contours of the sea floor.

For this particular piece in the 2011 collection, Dominique Baron, the specialist to whom Van Cleef & Arpels has entrusted the enamelling of these dials, employs the technique of paillonné enamel. The first layer consists of a very fine sheet of gold or silver onto which several coats of translucent enamel are then applied. With this precious metal as its base, the enamel dramatically increases in brilliance.

Les Voyages Extraordinaires de Jules Verne is a collection of 68 books written by the French novelist Jules Verne between 1863 and 1905. They are all highly unusual stories and some of them are genuine works of science fiction.

This collection brings together the essential elements of the work of Jules Verne. Assembled by his editor, Hetzell, who conceived a special binding for these works, these original editions are highly sought-after by book lovers. For the High Watchmaking collection presented at SIHH 2011, Nicolas Bos, Director of Creation for Van Cleef et Arpels, was inspired by four of these Voyages Extraordinaires :

Five Weeks in a Balloon, published in 1863, is the first novel in the «Voyages Extraordinaires» series. It recounts the adventures of three British explorers who fly over the African continent in a hydrogen balloon. This was the novel that
gave Hetzell the idea for the his famous covers.

Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, published in 1869, follows the submarine adventures of Captain Nemo one of Jules Verne’s most famous heroes. The novel inspired the father of film, Méliès, in 1907 but what has made it particularly famous is the film version of the book, produced by Disney studios in 1954 with James Mason and Kirk Douglas.

A Journey to the Center of the Earth published in 1864 features three explorers who penetrate the heart of the planet through an Icelandic volcano. This novel was also produced as a film in 1959 with James Mason and Pat Boone in the principal roles.

From the Earth to the Moon, published in 1865, is about the human expedition to the moon. This «Voyage» has also inspired a film by Méliès from 1902, an Offenbach opera in 1875, the famous «Space Mountains» attraction in Disneyland, and even several video games.
