  • RALPH LAUREN WATCHES 2011 INTRODUCTION

For 2011, Ralph Lauren continues to build on his foundation of three iconic watch collections: the Ralph Lauren Stirrup collection, the Ralph Lauren Slim Classique collection and the Ralph Lauren Sporting collection. Extending the depth and richness of the collections, Ralph Lauren introduces new designs, luxurious materials and refined finishes demonstrating an enduring passion that merges fine watchmaking heritage with the designer’s quintessential timeless aesthetic.

With several novelties to complement and reinforce the existing collections, the result is a comprehensive offering of products in a wider range, including more high-end pieces–highlighting the commitment to traditional craftsmanship and the one-of-a-kind lifestyle sensibility of the brand.

Showcasing the mastery of fine jewelry craftsmanship, the new Ralph Lauren Stirrup Diamond Link timepiece features a bejeweled case and bracelet entirely pavé set with glittering diamonds. In the Ralph Lauren Slim Classique Collection, the sophisticated elegance of the Art Deco era is recalled in a new square shape that brings the style's clean, geometric lines and functional beauty into the present day. The Ralph Lauren Sporting watches draw on the influence of the designer’s renowned car collection–with unique materials such as rare elm burlwood and sleek, matte ceramic, as well an homage to classical craftsmanship and modernity–with a stainless steel chronograph timepiece decorated with beautiful hand-guided guilloché.

    THE RALPH LAUREN SPORTING COLLECTION

“I’ve always liked purposeful things; things that are designed not just to be decorative. I like sports and speed, style and beauty.”
    — Ralph Lauren

The Ralph Lauren Sporting collection embodies a unique combination of style and performance. For 2011, the designer offers three new Ralph Lauren Sporting timepiece variations, presenting new materials and finishes to the collection.

Combining his passion for fine automobiles with his passion for fine timepieces, Ralph Lauren unveils the Ralph Lauren Sporting watch with wood dial, recalling the refined interior of his 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe. This timepiece features a stainless steel case with a warmly handsome dial in rich loupe d’orme or elm burlwood–in honor of the car’s iconic wooden dashboard and trim detail. Prized for its highly figured patterns and rarity, each piece of elm burlwood has unique grain, and has been traditionally used by artists and sculptors and in the consoles of luxury cars. The warmth of the wood is contrasted by the dial’s matte black galvanic center and by the black calf leather strap, reminiscent of the distinct juxtaposition of the wooden dashboard and black leather seating in Ralph Lauren’s prized vintage automobile. Showcasing both beauty and functionality, the Ralph Lauren Sporting watch combines bygone motoring elegance with the precision of a manual winding mechanical movement–caliber RL98295 made by IWC for Ralph Lauren–featuring a power reserve of 45 hours and a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour.

The Ralph Lauren Sporting Chronograph Black Ceramic watch makes a bold statement introducing ceramic into the collection for the first time. This new timepiece is realized in ceramic zirconia, a hightech material used in such demanding and industrial applications as jet engine components. This ultratough ceramic is used to construct a nearly scratchproof case with a light weight that makes it as comfortable as it is resilient. The uniquely silky matte finish and sleek, all black design extends to the bezel, dial, bracelet, buckle, and crown–with contrasting white luminous Roman numerals and hands, accented by a red or white-colored center chronograph hand. The sapphire clear caseback–a hallmark of the Ralph Lauren Sporting collection–is presented here in a smoky black fumé crystal, recalling the all black aesthetic of this new timepiece.

The Ralph Lauren Sporting Chronograph Guilloché timepiece brings the traditional art of hand-guided guilloché to that most iconic of 20th century materials: stainless steel. An homage to both classical craftsmanship and the essence of modernity, the silvery opaline dial of this watch features the same distinct barleycorn guilloché pattern that adorns the Ralph Lauren Slim Classique collection timepieces. Showcasing a complex pattern of 80 waves spiralling from the dial’s center to its edge, this iconic pattern is also echoed in the guilloché applied to the complex curves of the bezel. With the introduction of this renowned decorative art to the Ralph Lauren Sporting collection, the designer has created a chronograph that vividly evokes the elegance of sport.

All Ralph Lauren Sporting Chronograph timepieces are powered by the column wheel chronograph calibre RL750–made by Jaeger-LeCoultre for Ralph Lauren–with a 48 hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Both new chronograph watches are available in both 45mm and 39mm sizes.
