Just like magnetic fields are their&nbsp;<em>b\u00eate noire<\/em>. The accuracy of mechanical watches has always been the centre of attention in the workshops of great houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Swatch, plus pr\u00e9cis que Rolex ?! feat. Only the absolute time told by atomic clocks is perfectly regular. Even a quartz movement (32&nbsp;Hz) is late compared to them. Let&#8217;s not even talk about a mechanical calibre (3, 4&nbsp;Hz or even 5&nbsp;Hz)! In the watchmaking world, these highly accurate watches are called &#8220;chronometers&#8221;.<br>But beware not to mistake it with a chronograph, which is a sports instrument equipped with an additional function to measure times.&nbsp;<br>Still, though a chronometer is not a chronograph, a chronograph can be a chronometer&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not every watch can be a chronometer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To determine whether a watch is a &#8220;chronometer&#8221; or not, the watchmaking houses have no other choice than to have them be certified by an independent official institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.my-watchsite.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/cartemetas.jpg\" alt=\"METAS d\u00e9livre une carte avec l'obtention de la certification Master Chronometer\" class=\"wp-image-10000014988\" \/><figcaption>The Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) delivers a card as a proof of the Master Chronometer certification.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, only a metrology laboratory with all the necessary measuring tools can deliver this certification. Without it, it is in theory impossible to put the word chronometer on the watch.\u00a0<br>Only a small number of organizations are specialized in chronometry. An extremely professional institute which deserves much more recognition!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The COSC is the most famous Swiss institute, but there is also the METAS. France does not fall behind with Besan\u00e7on&#8217;s Astronomical Observatory and its famous T\u00eate de Vip\u00e8re stamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The very reliable Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute or COSC<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in 1973, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosc.swiss\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>COSC<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is the undisputed and most solicited organization in Switzerland to get the title of chronometer. The uncased calibres undergo extreme tests there.<br>The evaluation process of the mechanical movements takes fifteen days and fifteen nights. The calibres \u2013 which are tested in different positions and at different temperatures \u2013 must remain between a -4\/+6 seconds difference per day compared to atomic clocks.\u00a0<br>The COSC tests about 1.8 million watches each year \u2013 all types included. There is no other institute like it. But behind this impressive number, there is another reality.<br>Though only 5% of watches fail the tests, there are few certified models. They only represent about 6% of Swiss watches.<br>When speaking about COSC, two watchmaking houses specifically stand out: Breitling and Rolex.<br>These two houses are among the very rare Swiss manufactures to get all their instruments COSC-certified. And Breitling does so whether the models are quartz or mechanical watches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Breitling Super Chronomat 44 chronometers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The new Super Chromat 44 is a perfect symbiosis between a sports spirit, an elegant design and a chronometric accuracy.<br>With its 44&nbsp;mm diameter, the model is inspired by a Frecce Tricolori watch designed in 1983 for the pilots of the Italian aerial squadron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Breitling Super Chronomat - Anthemic\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ft_bfFFyuTM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>The Breitling Super Chronomat collection presented by Brad Pitt, Charlize Theron and Adam Driver.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Two different versions of the watch are available in several variations. And for a reason. The Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology has designed a certification which surpasses all that has ever been done before. And it is, evidently, very hard to obtain it.<br>This certification, named Master Chronometer, goes even further than the COSC&#8217;s extreme tests. But it is inspired by the notorious institute since a watch cannot apply if it is not Swiss made and certified by the COSC beforehand.<br>Between chronometric accuracy (obviously), magnetic resistance, water resistance, as well as autonomy, METAS is redefining the level of requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TUDOR Black Bay Ceramic - Discover the METAS Certification\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gO6D-gP6mpc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Short video about the Master Chronometer certification of the Tudor Black Bay Ceramic watches.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The accuracy performances are evaluated at two temperatures, in six different positions (some of which are not tested by the COSC) and two levels of winding of the barrel (100% and 33%).<br>The first difference is that the Federal Institute of Metrology necessarily tests the finished watch and not just the calibre.<br>Secondly, the accepted difference per day is of 0\/+5 seconds a day&#8230;<br>Yes, you read that right: a Master Chronometer-certified watch cannot be late! Except when its power reserve is down. But even when stopped, &#8220;it will tell you the right time twice a day&#8221;. Another feat the instrument needs to achieve to get the precious METAS title: be resistant \u2013 while still being accurate \u2013 to extreme magnetic fields of 15,000&nbsp;gauss. This is extraordinary since this intensity corresponds to an MRI scan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Black Bay Ceramic, the very first Tudor Master Chronometer watch<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the certification delivered by METAS was, up till very recently, the exclusive domain of the Omega manufacture, another brand managed to get the Master Chronometer title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.my-watchsite.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Sans-titre-3-2.jpg\" alt=\"Le chronom\u00e8tre Tudor Black Bay Ceramic est une montre \u00e9tanche \u00e0 200 m\u00e8tres\" class=\"wp-image-10000014968\" \/><figcaption>The Black Bay Ceramic (\u20ac4,440) is the first Tudor certified chronometer by the Federal Institute of Metrology.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, Tudor&#8217;s house developed a special Black Bay which passed the tests with flying colours. This version of the emblematic vintage dive watch sports a 41&nbsp;mm diameter and is water resistant up to 200&nbsp;metres.<br>The case is made of black ceramic and black PVD-coated steel. Furthermore, this Manufacture Tudor MT5602-1 automatic sports a stunning black sandblasted finish, a tungsten skeletonized rotor and a cutting-edge balance spring made of non-magnetic silicon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.my-watchsite.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Sans-titre-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Tudor Black Bay Ceramic\" class=\"wp-image-10000014966\" \/><figcaption>Tudor&#8217;s Black Bay Ceramic also comes with an additional strap made of handcrafted fabric made in France.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another asset: the 70-hour METAS-certified power reserve. Thus, we could say the Black Bay Ceramic is a &#8220;weekendproof&#8221; watch. Only cloud in the horizon: the absence of Superluminova on the unidirectional rotating bezel which makes it impossible to get the name of &#8220;dive watch&#8221; according to the ISO norm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.my-watchsite.com\/black-bay\/7745-black-bay-ceramic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our Tudor Black Ceramic technical data sheet<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Besan\u00e7on&#8217;s Astronomical Observatory: France also knows how to certify chronometers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to chronometric certifications, it is true that Switzerland usually takes all the credits. However, those who care about accuracy know very well the expertise and the excellence of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.besancon-ville-du-temps.fr\/certifications-chronometriques\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Besan\u00e7on&#8217;s Astronomical Observatory<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in France.<br>The independent organization has been certifying finished watches since 1897 by putting its renowned\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.besancon-ville-du-temps.fr\/la-vipere-ou-le-poincon-de-lexcellence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>T\u00eate de Vip\u00e8re<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0stamp.<br>The models are examined over the course of fifteen days, in five positions and at three different temperatures and must respect the ISO standard n\u00b03159 which defines the status of &#8220;wrist-chronometers with spring balance oscillator&#8221;. Just like for the COSC certification, the differences must be less than -4\/+6 seconds a day, but the tests are much stricter since the calibres are inside their cases.<br>One thing is for sure, the number of timepieces passing the test and getting the T\u00eate de Vip\u00e8re stamp are rather limited in the watchmaking world. Indeed, only 500\u00a0watches were certified between 2006 and 2018! They are still quite rare.<br>The TAG Heuer Carrera Tourbillon &#8220;T\u00eate de Vip\u00e8re&#8221; caused quite the sensation when it was released three years ago. Apart from this model, you must seek such watches to find them. Still, we managed to find one, and from a French brand on top of that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Akrone, the French exception<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Akrone is first and foremost the story of three Bretons, who are very determined to defend and redevelop French watchmaking. To do so, they launched their idea through the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter in 2015. It was an immediate success. The production of the first watches was financed with the \u20ac70,000 raised in only a couple of hours!<br>The workshops are located in Nantes. Assembly, adjustments, maintenance, decoration of the pieces&#8230; The different trades of watchmaking and arts and crafts are combined to make the Akrone watches.<br>The very recent history of the brand is also closely linked to the T\u00eate de Vip\u00e8re. Indeed, the manufacture decided to get the performances of its first creation \u2013 the K-02 dive watch featuring an automatic calibre \u2013 certified by the Observatory of Besan\u00e7on. Once again, it was a real success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.my-watchsite.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/akronek02.jpg\" alt=\"Premi\u00e8re montre d'Akron, le chronom\u00e8tre K-02 est \u00e9tanche jusqu'\u00e0 300 m\u00e8tres\" class=\"wp-image-10000014964\" \/><figcaption>Certified by Besan\u00e7on&#8217;s Astronomical Observatory, the K-02 titanium dive watch was Akrone&#8217;s manufacture first model.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>K-02 chronometer, the first partner of a cave diving record<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to the chronometric accuracy, there are no issues in sight and the same goes for the performances as this titanium instrument, water-resistant up to 300&nbsp;metres, was tested in a natural setting by the cave diver Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique&nbsp;Swierczynski when he beat the French record at a depth of 267&nbsp;metres! It sports a green dial as a tribute to the reptile.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Akrone K-04 watch, a chronometer for everyone.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The K-04 (Akrone&#8217;s fourth model) is much simpler with its steel design made to fit every wrist.<br>Though the aim and the style are not the same, the performances are identical since the K-04 also sports a T\u00eate de Vip\u00e8re stamp.<br>The K-02 and K-04 are limited editions which are, sadly, no longer available, though you can still find a lot of other models on Akrone&#8217;s website.
