The five-minute clock of the Semper&nbsp;Opera&nbsp;House in&nbsp;Dresden.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Isn\u2019t it surprising that such a useful and obvious complication was not invented centuries ago on pocket watches? Still, it\u2019s the truth: A. Lange &amp; S\u00f6hne invented this ingenious mechanic bearing two distinctive apertures that allows a larger display for the date in\u2026 1994! What has influenced it? The \u201cfive-minute\u201d clock of the Semper Opera House in Dresden, birthplace of Walter&nbsp;Lange, grandson of the brand\u2019s founder. The clock, which indicates the time every five minutes on two distinctive windows, served as inspiration for the Lange&nbsp;1, the iconic model of the Maison.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The outsize date mechanism\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YouzFPSD77o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>The Maison A.Lange&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;S\u00f6hne has even made a short video to explain everything about the big date.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But how does a big date work? By combining two extremely thin and perfectly aligned discs that turn at the same time at midnight. While the cross-shaped disc displays the dozens (1, 2 and 3) the other displays the units (see the animation in the video above).&nbsp;<br>\u201cSo simple!\u201d you might say, but it was not an obvious idea. Now, \u201cbig date\u201d watches are common among all watchmaking manufacture, even on Quartz cheap models made in China. It is indeed the prerogative of great inventions, to be remade by many to be useful to all.
