One of the pioneers in the art of getting heavier-than-air aircraft powered by internal combustion engines into the air was the Brazilian dandy and balloonist Alberto Santos-Dumont. Convinced he could lift the plane he was building off the ground, he asked his friend Louis Cartier to design an innovative wristwatch for him, capable of measuring the duration of his flights aboard his strange flying machines.
