This dive into three close fields \u2013 mineralogy, gemology and jewelry making \u2013 have amazed spectators. Myself included!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Van Cleef <em>&amp; <\/em>Arpels and the MNHN, sure as fate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year, the National Museum presents a grandiose temporary exhibition in the center of the Galerie de l\u2019Evolution. This year, \u201c<em>Pierres Pr\u00e9cieuses<\/em>\u201d is in the limelight with the participation of Van Cleef <em>&amp;<\/em> Arpels. With her decades\u2019 worth of savoir-faire, the High Jewelry Maison offered all her technical and creative expertise in order to bring about a real exchange between art and science. But I learned that this was not the first collaboration of these two entities. Indeed, the 2016 \u201cArt and Science of Gems\u201d exhibition in Singapore and various research projects and conferences at the Ecole des Arts Joailliers had inspired some more partnerships. Nicolas Bos, CEO of Van Cleef <em>&amp;<\/em> Arpels, claims that this collaboration \u201c<em>follows the tradition of a dialogue between aesthetics and science, between art and technique; a dialogue, inherent to our work, that Van Cleef &amp; Arpels wishes to emphasize and pass on.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u201cVan Cleef &amp; Arpels: The Art and Science of Gems\u201d exhibition, at ArtScience Museum\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/L1B6PCzR_-w?feature=oembed&#038;rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption><em><strong>The purpose of the 2016 exhibition \u201cVan Cleef &amp; Arpels: The Art and Science of Gems\u201d at the Singapore ArtScience Museum was to explain how the gems used in the Maison\u2019s creations formed on the Earth billions of years ago.<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The \u201c<em>Pierres Pr\u00e9cieuses<\/em>\u201d exhibition: a scientific and aesthetic approach.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Considered as instruments of power, objects of seduction and even scientific subjects, minerals, gems and jewelry have always fascinated entire civilizations throughout history. Diamond, ruby, emerald, aquamarine or even turquoise, those treasures worked on by human hands come from minerals shaped into the depths of Earth millenaries ago. Man has never spared any effort in the quest of revealing the radiance of these precious stones, using ancestral knowledge then acquired modern techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.my-watchsite.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/vca4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6672\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Amethysts of the French Crown Jewels (77,1 carat), amethyst parure of Marie-Louise of Austria (1791-1847) \u00a9 MNHN \/ F. Farges<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The exposition intends to emphasize this scientific and aesthetic approach through both the beauty of the pieces exhibited and recent mineralogy discoveries. Indeed, as Bruno David, president of the National Museum said, <\/em><em>\u201cthis exhibit is emblematic of the transversality between different worlds. Farges<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dive into an immersive tour with the \u201cPierres Pr\u00e9cieuses\u201d exhibition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Conceived by the designer Patrick Jouin and the architect Sanjit Manku, the exhibition scenography invites to the discovery of an ever-shifting universe, with grandiose colors and changing materials. Through a well-thought and approachable orchestration, the circuit retraces the original formation of minerals and their use by humanity whose know-how has been perfected throughout the ages. This first part introduces the second, which explores the shaping of minerals in order to obtain fabulous creations, a process showed through the presentation of each kind (diamond, topaz, sapphire, etc) under three different aspects: raw, shaped and embedded in High Jewelry pieces. A great initiative to show to any neophyte \u2013 as was I \u2013 the transformation of a simple stone into a stunning jewelry artwork. The third and last part made me realize how important was Paris\u2019 role \u2013 be it historic, artistic or scientific \u2013 in the evolution and diffusion of mineralogic knowledge which artists eventually appropriated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The priceless Van Cleef &amp; Arpels collections at the MNHN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.my-watchsite.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/vca7.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6681\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Platinum, emerald and diamond necklace (1929) \u2013 Collection of Her Highness Faiza, Princess of Egypt &#8211; Van Cleef &amp; Arpels Collection &#8211; Patrick Gries \u2013 \u00a9 Van Cleef &amp; Arpels SA<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I was speechless in front of these 500 minerals, gems and objets d\u2019art from the Museum\u2019s extraordinary and prestigious collection and 200 jewelry pieces borrowed from Van Cleef <em>&amp; <\/em>Arpels, and feeling very lucky of this opportunity. For instance, this Fuschia platinum and yellow gold clip, inspired by a floral theme \u2013 dear to Van Cleef &amp; Arpels \u2013 illustrates the exceptional work done on the petals in Mystery Set (<em>Serti Myst\u00e9rieux) <\/em>rubies. Patented by the jewelry maker in 1933, this exclusive technique was a revolution in the world of gemstones setting. Indeed, it enables to fix faceted stones on a thin gold lattice of two tenths of a millimeter, without any apparent bezel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.my-watchsite.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/vca3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6682\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Fuschia clip \u2013 Platinum, yellow gold, Mystery Set rubies, diamonds \u2013 Van Cleef &amp; Arpels Collection \u2013 Perfect example of the floral theme always favored by the Maison, and of the iconic Mystery Set work. Particularly when I came upon \u2013 among others \u2013 the <em>Grande Table des Orsini<\/em> (15<sup>th<\/sup> century), made of bronze and Carrara marble, ornated with lapis-lazuli, antique marble, jasper, agate, alabaster and nacre, a divine beauty!
