Alpina takes height
The International Skyrunning Federation (ISF) announces a new partnership for 2015 with luxury sport watch manufacturer Alpina Watches, a Swiss family-owned company manufacturing exceptionally robust mechanical and connected sport watches engineered and built to withstand extreme natural environments, especially at high altitudes – the perfect match for skyrunning.
As Official Watch of the 2015 Skyrunner® World Series and European Skyrunning Championships, Alpina Watches will be present at a select number of events stretching across the globe from the skyrunning heart-land in the Alps to north of the Arctic Circle, East to Hong Kong and West to America’s rugged Montana mountains.
A key element of the partnership between Alpina and the ISF is the Alpina Smart Time Prize, which will award exceptional performance by participants according to the “Smart Time Formula”. The formula is based timing at the highest point of the race with a bonus given to younger and older competitors, putting everyone at the same level, irrespective of the final race result. The men’s and women’s winners of the Alpina Smart Time Prize will each be awarded with an Alpina Horological Smartwatch.
Marino Giacometti, ISF President and skyrunning founder, says, “Together with Alpina, we studied an exclusive formula to reward runners’ performance according to a smart equalizing algorithm. In this sport the rewards don’t just come from touching the sky! We’re very pleased to be able to encourage all participants with this additional prize which adjusts performance to the age of the athlete.”
Guido Benedini, Alpina CEO, comments, “Innovation, when combined with purpose, becomes progress. At Alpina, our innovations are exclusively devoted to serve the functional and design needs of those individuals challenging the hardest places on earth – such as the Alpine summits – home to Skyrunning. The best example is our new Horological Smartwatch. We are proud to partner with the ISF, which is leading the phenomenal worldwide growth of trail running”
About the Skyrunner® World Series
2015 SKYRUNNER® WORLD SERIES & SKYRUNNING EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Skyrunner® World Series is an annual circuit of high altitude running races that stretch across the world’s mountain ranges.
Skyrunning was founded in the Alps in 1992 by Italian mountaineer, Marino Giacometti, and is governed by the International Skyrunning Federation (ISF), which counts 34 member countries. From the first records in the Alps more than 20 years ago, the sport, now global, is rapidly growing in popularity and numbers.
In 2015, five Continental Championships have been introduced which, apart from titles and medals at stake, also count for World Series ranking points.
Unlike other running disciplines, skyrunning represents the ultimate challenge where races are measured not just by distance, but also by vertical climb and technical difficulty – in a natural mountain environment where earth meets sky.
ALPINA, THE ORIGINAL SWISS SPORT WATCH
ALPINE SPORTS WATCH MANUFACTURING – SINCE 1883
Alpina, famous for its red triangle signature, is an independent, family-owned fine watchmaking manufacture based in Geneva, Switzerland. Founded in 1883, Alpina’s watchmaking history spans more than 130 years. A true pioneer of the Swiss watchmaking industry, Alpina has been the source of numerous innovations, patents and calibers. Alpina invented the concept of the sport watch, as we know it today, with the birth of its legendary Alpina 4 in 1938.
Faithful to its long tradition of creating mechanical calibers, Alpina manufactures five in-house movements: the Tourbillon AL-980, the Flyback Chronograph AL-760, the World Timer AL-718, the Automatic Regulator AL-950 and the Small Date Automatic AL-710.
Alpina’s mission is to design and engineer luxury sport watches that operate with the greatest precision and reliability possible in the most demanding sporting environments, like the Alps.

Instead, the beautiful laser cut hands on the watch dial display information in analog form. The Alpina Horological Smartwatch retains its natural sporty beauty and delivers the benefits of the quantified self without ever having to recharge a battery. The 100m/330ft water-resistant Alpina Horological Smartwatch supports the following functionalities:
– Always-on time & date
– MotionX® activity tracking
– Sleeptracker® sleep monitoring
– Sleep cycle alarms
– Get-Active alerts
– Adaptive coaching
– 2+ years battery life
The MotionX patented sensor-fusion engine tracks activity and sleep patterns with high accuracy. Activity and sleep information is presented in real-time on the Swiss Horological Smartwatch using beautiful traditional analog dials. The Swiss Horological Smartwatch synchronizes automatically with applications on Apple and Android smartphones. On the iOS and Android apps, simple and easy-to-understand graphics highlight how much one has moved and slept during the day, week, or month. This data will assist users to better understanding themselves, and along with appropriate goal setting and intelligent coaching, will improve their well-being. Better sleep and a more active lifestyle are widely recognized as simple, but effective, positive behavioral changes.
