Da Vinci Automatic 36 et Moon Phase 36 : IWC celebrates femininity in 2017

By MyWatch

A few days before the opening of the International Fine Watchmaking Exhibition (SIHH) in Geneva, IWC reveals new watches dedicated to women: the Da Vinci Automatic 36 and the Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase 36.

Da Vinci automatic
The collection offers four versions of the Da Vinci Auto- matic 36 (Ref. IW458307/IW458308/IW458310/IW458312): a diamond-set model in 18-carat red gold (Ref. IW458310) and three in stainless steel (Ref. IW458307/IW458312), one of which also has a diamond-set bezel (Ref. IW458308). The discreetly recessed inner circle on the dial, the semi- circular crown and the round date window at “6 o’clock” form a harmonious ensemble. Thanks to the moving horns, the lugs do not protrude and the strap is held comfortably close to slim wrists. Combined with the new three-wing butter y clasp, they ensure increased wearing comfort. All watches are equipped with the 35111 calibre, are tested for water-resistance to 3 bar and have a power reserve of 42 hours.
The most exclusive of the Da Vinci Automatic 36 models is the Reference IW458310, featuring an 18-carat red gold case and linked bracelet together with 54 pure white diamonds on the bezel. The gold-plated hands and golden appliqués harmonize well with the silver-plated dial, while the blue seconds hand provides a colourful highlight.

The stainless-steel version set with 54 diamonds (Ref. IW458308) with its raspberry-coloured alligator leather strap from Santoni guarantees its wearer a stylish entrance. The striking colour contrasts with the black displays on the silver-plated dial.
Reference IW458307 comes entirely in stainless steel with a mirror-polished link bracelet. The gold-plated hands and appliqués form a harmonious colour composition with the blue seconds hand on the silver-plated dial.
With its dark blue dial and alligator leather strap, Reference IW458312 is the ideal timepiece for self-con dent women. The cool, understated blue contrasts starkly with the pol- ished stainless-steel case and elegant horns. The small blue date display and the rhodium-plated hands and appliqués blend harmoniously into the overall appearance.

All Da Vinci Automatic 36 references feature an engraving of the “Flower of Life” on the case back. This geometrical gure was the object of numerous drawings by Leonardo da Vinci. It represents his un agging search for mathematical rules for beauty and proportions, and thus symbolizes the new design approach of the watch collection.

Da Vinci automatic Moon Phase 36
With a diameter of 36 millimetres, a moon phase complication, a semicircular crown and its elegant materials, the Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase 36 (Ref. IW459306/ IW459307/IW459308) is virtually predestined to appeal to watch devotees with a passion for luxury and technical sophistication. The recessed inner circle, which adds a more pronounced three-dimensional structure to the silver- plated dial and emphasizes circularity as a design feature of the line – together with the richly coloured Santoni alli- gator leather straps – complements the feminine appeal of a watch that is water-resistant to 3 bar. The new lugs with their moving horns ensure that the strap ts perfectly round the wrist and is comfortable to wear. The mechanical 35800-calibre automatic movement powers this model, while pulling the crown enables stopping of the central sec- onds to set the watch. The “Flower of Life”, a geometrical gure with several regularly overlapping circles and object of intensive study by Leonardo da Vinci, is engraved on the case back.

The Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase 36 is available in three models: one in red gold, one in a stainless-steel case with diamonds on the bezel and one in stainless steel, all with silver-plated dials. The version in 18-carat red gold (Ref. IW459308) is the outstanding gem among the trio. An impressive ensemble in gold, it comprises a 36-millimetre case, striking horns, a semicircular crown and a bronze- coloured alligator leather strap by Santoni with a pin buckle. The gold-and-blue moon phase rounds off the harmonious overall impression. While the actual length of a lunar month is 29.53 days, the classic moon phase design has a gear train that rounds it down to 29.5 days. The gear train ad- vances the disc automatically by a single tooth each day to depict the correct phase of the moon. When necessary, the display can be adjusted via the correction button at “2 o’clock” using the pin supplied with the watch.

54 pure white diamonds encircle the stainless-steel model (Ref. IW459307). A dark brown alligator leather strap with a butter y clasp complements the model with the diamond- set bezel. On the silver-plated dial, the shades of gold used for the numerals as well as the hour and minute hands alternate with the blue of the seconds hand and harmonize with the gold-and-blue moon phase display.
In the case of Reference IW459306 in stainless steel, the dial, moon and stars are finished in shimmering silver while the displays, sky and Santoni leather strap with its stainless-steel butter y clasp are all dark blue. The power reserve for the three models is 42 hours.

Engraver Ornamentation
IWC Schaffhausen honours Leonardo da Vinci’s contribu- tion to the common understanding of aesthetics during the Renaissance with an engraving of the “Flower of Life” on the back of the Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase 36. In his notebooks and sketches, the artist focused his attention intensively on the mathematically designed circular struc- ture, in which there are no irregularities and everything is interconnected. Its basic geometry is the source of several mathematical and universal laws, such as Pythagoras’s theorem, Platonic solids or the golden section, as well as ndings on human proportions.
