- Baume & Mercier celebrates the return of ultra-thin watches
In the watch industry the economic crisis will at least have had one advantage: that of promoting a return to moderation. After years of ever more extravagant and even outright “bling bling” type watches, 2010 sees a return to more traditional and reliable values, as well as to more enduring models. And in this field, the classic ultra-thin watch is THE ultimate stylistic expression.
This type of watch model is an integral part of the Baume & Mercier heritage. In the 1920s, the archives of this Fabrique d’horlogerie soignée (meticulous watch manufacturer) already mentioned collections of “thin and ultra-thin men’s watches”. In the vanguard of technology at the time, they already bore the Qualité Genève label. In 1965, Baume & Mercier launched one of the world’s thinnest calendar watches thanks to its new “planetary rotor” movement. From 1980 onwards, it became one of the first watch brands to use the ultra-thin “Flatline” quartz movements created by the ETA Swiss movement manufacturer.
The two Classima Executives L Ultra Thin models launched at the last SIHH are worthy heirs to this prestigious heritage. They are part of the Classima Executive collection that Baume & Mercier has brought back in the spotlight in 2010: a collection housing simple or “small complication” movements and characterized by classically elegant design, affordability and Swiss quality. A world apart from the sophisticated, oversized and often incredibly expensive sports watches we have seen in recent years, these two ultra-thin models embody a return to the solid values of Swiss watchmaking. These discreetly elegant yet far from boring watches are available with a white or black dial and their style makes them ideal to wear in all circumstances.
Made in Switzerland, they are enriched by a tradition of excellence and extreme care that has fortunately remained unchanged since the 1920s: an ultra-thin (1.6 mm) Swiss movement, a polished stainless steel case, a crown adorned with the brand emblem (the Greek letter Phi), a refined dial with applied rhodium-plated Roman numerals and hour-markers, a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, an alligator leather strap… combined with all the practical user-friendliness of a quartz movement.
