Designed for style-conscious globetrotters and for businessmen who appreciate exclusive time-pieces, the new Escale Worldtime Minute Repeater watch pushes the boundaries of creativity in watchmaking just that little further, while continuing to draw its inspiration from the history of Louis Vuitton and its legendary trunks.
At a time when borders are disappearing, Louis Vuitton offers an unprecedented combination of two elegant complications: the Repetition Minutes and Worldtime features. It is an alliance as refined as it is original, that reshapes the contours of a new era and reveals a radically different watch for frequent travellers.
A case that entices you to travel
With its pink gold (bezel, horns, crown) and titanium (middle) case, the Escale Worldtime Minute Repeater watch evokes long-distance travelling. Like a small trunk containing a movement of great rarity, the silhouette of the case is inspired by the history of the House and the art of travel according to Louis Vuitton, and its four horns recalling the corners of the famous trunks.
In the spirit of secret drawers, the Escale Repetition Minutes Worldtime watch has two secret features that work using the bolt and the pushbutton crown.
With a diameter of 44mm and 11.75mm thick, the Escale Worldtime Minute Repeater watch has abeautiful dial opening thanks to its slender bezel providing optimal legibility of the time in 24 time zones.
At eight o′clock, the discreet pink gold horn turns into a bolt for arming and operating the minute repeating mechanism that melodiously sounds the time in the place of the watch owner’s origin, previously set using a simple action on the crown.
On the back of the timepiece, the sapphire crystal reveals a mechanically manufactured hand-wound calibre, developed and assembled entirely by the master watchmakers at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton in Geneva.
A completely new minute repeater
Traditionally, a minute repeater watch sounds the local time displayed by the central hands, on request. With the Escale Worldtime Minute Repeater watch, the master watchmakers at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton have pushed the refinement of the art to its peak to allow the owner to sound the time in his home town, whatever the country in which he is at the moment.
Setting his home time zone is the simple to do. Just align the “V“ engraved on one of the sides of the pink gold octagonal crown with the dial face. In this position, the nail on the end of the crown becomes a single push-button for setting the “home time“, and thus the time that will be played by the minute repeater function.
Made of titanium due to the excellent sound quality of this ultra-light and very durable material, the middle of the watch is transformed into a sound box with exceptional sound quality.
A unique worldtime function
The face of the watch has three separate discs, which are adjustable by the crown alone. Developed and assembled by the La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton Manufacture, they are synchronised by a mechanical hand-wound calibre with 447 components and a 100-hour power reserve.
The colourful large outer disc has two rings and bears the initials of 24 cities worldwide. It turns on demand (position 1 of the crown) for setting the base city, positioning noon beneath the yellow arrow.
The middle disc, which indicates the hours, is in permanent rotation and is divided into black and white semi-circles to distinguish between day and night. The smaller, central disc shows the minute digits using a precise and contrasted timer design. Setting the hours and minutes is done by the crown (position 2).
The display of “World Time“without hands is an original interpretation imagined by master watchmakers at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, for knowing what time it is - instantly - in 24 time zones defined by Sir Stanford Fleming and formalised in 1884.
Thus, using the Escale Worldtime Minute Repeater watch, a simple glance under the initials of a city enables you to know the precise time in the time zone it symbolises; reading the minutes is done intuitively under the yellow arrow pointing to the time in the base city.
A dial in the colours of the world
Historically, Louis Vuitton has offered its customers the ability to customise their trunks with bands of colour, initials, motifs and other geometric pictographs painted by hand. This colourful, geometric universe served as the inspiration behind the creation of the face of the Escale Worldtime Minute Repeater watch.
In a specially dedicated workshop in La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, the craftsman requires 40 hours to make each dial by using the technique of miniature oil painting. Thirty-eight colours are applied one by one, by brush and by small successive touches, before going on to be dried in an oven heated to 100° Celsius.
The result is captivating in its brightness, its relief and the chromatic contrast obtained, and is magnified by the visual effect separating the crystal from the dial. In order not to hinder the movement of the movable discs, the triangle in a pink gold hue and topped with a yellow arrow (the only fixed element on the dial, allowing the time in the base city to be read) is placed directly under the sapphire crystal.
