DESCRIPTION

  • LUMINOR GMT 44 MM

A second time zone, the chronometer certificate, the high degree of water-resistance and the case which is part brush-finished and part polished are the distinctive features of the new Luminor GMT 44 mm with an automatic movement which belongs to the Contemporary Collection.

The Luminor is the updated version of one of the legendary models which Panerai made for the commandos of the Italian Navy at the time of the Second World War. Specialist divers’ watches did not exist at that time and the Florentine manufacture was the one which opened the way for this watchmaking speciality with the Radiomir and, a little later, with the Luminor models, unmistakeable both for their size and their aesthetic characteristics. The water-resistance of the setting crown was no longer achieved by having it screw down, but by means of a device in the form of a bridge with a lever hinged at the centre, which Panerai patented more than half a century ago and which immediately identified the watch.

Apart from the diameter, which has changed from 47 mm to 44 mm for practical reasons of usability, the case of the new Luminor faithfully reproduces that of its predecessors and in this respect the exclusive bridge surrounding the crown still stands out. When the lever is raised the crown is freed, enabling the hands to be adjusted; but when it is lowered the crown is pressed strongly against the caseband and a series of seals which prevent any infiltration of water to a depth of 300 metres (a conservative figure, since the watches are tested to a pressure corresponding to 400 metres). The new feature compared to the Luminors of the past concerns the finishing of the stainless steel in which the case is executed; the caseband and the lever bridge have a brushed finish while the bezel has been mirror-polished, thus creating an effect of contrast and depth between the various parts.

The traditional black dial has two large Arabic numerals and baton hour markers, surmounted by numerals in 24-hour format, which are indicated by the thin central hand tipped with an arrow point which makes one complete rotation not in 12 but in 24 hours. As in all Officine Panerai models, night-time visibility is assured by the exceptional luminosity of the numerals, the hour markers and the wide, partly skeletonised hands, while a small magnifying lens to facilitate reading the date is set in the anti-reflective sapphire crystal (3.5 mm thick to withstand great depths).

The movement of the Luminor GMT 44 mm of the Contemporary Collection is the automatic OP VIII calibre, 13¼ lignes in diameter with 21 jewels. The bridges have Côtes de Genève decoration and the watch has a power reserve of 42 hours. All the adjustments (hours, minutes and second time zone) are carried out by the winding crown and the watch is supplied with the official chronometer certificate issued by C.O.S.C. (the Swiss organisation which certifies the accuracy of movements submitted to it after 15 days of tests).
