DESCRIPTION

  • 1976 – 2026 Nautilus

50th anniversary of an icon of sporty elegance

Patek Philippe is celebrating the 50th anniversary of one of its flagship collections, the Nautilus. On the occasion of Watches and Wonders 2026, the Manufacture is reinterpreting its icon’s sporty elegance by celebrating the very essence of its design, its signature features and the slenderness of its case. It is bringing out four new versions, each one a limited edition.

Two large-size (Jumbo) 41 millimeter models lead the way, in white gold on a metal bracelet for Reference 5810/1G-001, and on a composite strap for Reference 5810G-001. Reference 5610/1P-001 offers the cool seduction of a 38-millimeter case in platinum on a metal bracelet. These three anniversary models confine their displays to the hours and minutes, respecting the purity of the design principles of the original Nautilus case, to which they add the distinction of a remarkably slender, elegant profile, enabled by the presence, at the heart of each one, of the ultra-thin self-winding caliber 240. This historic caliber was first presented in 1977, just a year after the launch of the Nautilus collection in 1976.

Finally, in a nod to the disruptive design of this enfant terrible of the 1970s, a surprising and spectacular Nautilus desk watch, equipped with the 8-Day caliber, joins the new models as Reference 958G-001 in white gold.

Launched in 1976, the Nautilus signaled in many respects a break with the classic codes of luxury watchmaking beginning with the choice of steel, a metal unheard of for a watch in this category; and the atypical style of its case, neither round, nor rectangular, presenting an octagonal bezel with softened corners. Indeed, this was not a design created merely for the originality of its shape, but a form dictated by its function as a water-resistant watch case, inspired by the principle of a ship’s porthole. So there is technical thinking behind each of its details. The case is a two-part construction, in which the part comprising the case back and middle is drilled in only one place, for the winding-stem; the bezel is attached and pressed down onto the two case hinges by four clamping screws - a construction reminiscent of the portholes of the old transatlantic liners, with their hinge-and-bolt locking system, hermetically clamping the joints onto the steel framework.

Beautiful finishes alternating polished and satin-brushed surfaces play up the originality of the design, while its robust construction combines with the water-resistance of its case –a technical feat at the time for such for a slender, elegant watch, and nothing short of an exploit for a sports watch produced as a series. Its dial, adorned with horizontal relief embossing underlines the watch’s strong character and increases its sporty allure. With its bracelet, perfectly integrated into the case, tapering harmoniously towards the comfortable, robust clasp, the Nautilus quickly won recognition as the perfect incarnation of sporty elegance.

Over the years, it has appeared in different versions and endowed with a range of complications, while always remaining faithful to its instantly recognizable design.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this cult watch and mark the opening of Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026), Patek Philippe is presenting 4 new Nautilus models produced as limited editions. Four variations on a unique design that has lost nothing of its force and originality.

Nautilus desk watch, Reference 958G-001 in white gold

With the surprising and unexpected Reference 958G-001, the iconic Patek Philippe sports watch of the 1970s assumes, for the first time, the form of a desk watch, without sacrificing an iota of its timeless elegance or altering its instantly identifiable style.

Crafted in white gold, the 2-part form case measures 50.65 millimeters in diameter (10 – 4 o’clock). Although it has no bracelet, the emblematic Nautilus silhouette retains its assertive lines, from the octagonal bezel with rounded corners to the case construction, inevitably recalling that of a ship’s porthole. Lavish finishing techniques such as the contrasting polished and satin-brushed surfaces underline the originality of the design.

Displaying the Nautilus style at its purest, the blue sunburst dial is adorned with horizontal relief embossing. The applied hour markers in white gold shimmer with spectacular baguette-cut diamonds (total 0.96 ct), while rounded baton-type hands in white gold with a white luminescent coating indicate the hours and minutes.

On the back of the desk watch, the hinged cover presents a decoration protected by a sapphire crystal. A blue sunburst with horizontal relief embossing, this decoration centers an applied Calatrava cross in white gold with a satin-brushed finish. Beneath the cover, a circle mounted on the back of the watch is engraved with the inscription “50th Anniversary Nautilus 1976 – 2026 Patek Philippe”, while a sapphire crystal provides a view of the manually wound caliber 31-505 8J PS IRM CI J launched in 2025 in the Calatrava 8-Day Reference 5328G-001. A splendid sight with its beautiful finishes, its architecture incorporates a Pulsomax® escapement in Silinvar® and a Spiromax® balance spring. Its two going barrels connected in series guarantee that it will function with perfect precision for eight full days, with a ninth day “in reserve”.

In addition to indication of the hours and minutes, this caliber enables the display of an instantaneous date by a hand, instantaneous day in an aperture, and small seconds at six o’clock. The power reserve indicator keeps the user informed of the remaining autonomy.

The hinge system used to open and close the cover also serves as a support to ensure that the watch remains perfectly stable and readable when placed on a desk.

The Nautilus 50th anniversary desk watch Reference 958G-001 is produced as a limited edition of 100 pieces.

The Nautilus limited-edition 50th anniversary watches are delivered in a presentation case with a cork exterior –a nod to the first Nautilus, Reference 3700, of 1976, or to the case used for the 40th anniversary editions in 2016.

In line with the unified standard of water resistance declared official by Patek Philippe in 2024, the wristwatches References 5810/1G-001, 5810G-001 and 5610/1P-001 are water-resistant to 30m. The desk watch Reference 958G-001, however, is protected only against humidity and dust.

To ensure the homogeneity and clarity of the information provided to customers, Patek Philippe has decided to introduce a new unified standard of water resistance set at 30 meters for all watches certified as water-resistant having been tested in air and underwater by immersion at an overpressure of 3 bars (corresponding to a depth of 30 m). This measure makes it possible to guarantee the same performance level across all the models concerned and to provide perfectly comprehensible information as to the day-to-day activities in which clients can engage while wearing their watch: washing their hands, showering, bathing, swimming, and other aquatic activities, including diving to a depth of 30 m – which corresponds in large measure to actual utilization.
