35TH ANNIVERSARY NEWPORT MARÉOGRAPHE
Against wind and tide
Throughout 2023, French watchmaker HERBELIN is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Newport. The adventure continues with the addition to the collection of a new model closely linked to the maritime world: the 35th Anniversary Newport Maréographe. The special feature of this timepiece is that it displays the time and the level of the tides according to the movements of the moon. Useful not only to sailors and surfers, but also sea swimmers and beach walkers, this exceptional watch complication is very simple to use. Explanation:
A TIDE LEVEL INDICATOR
The dial, in Newport blue sunray, is divided into four zones that represent a tidal cycle, with each phase inscribed on the inner circle. The sea rises and falls on average every 12 hours and 25 minutes, and the tide hand, topped with a red anchor, respects this rhythm. As each hour marker represents an interval of 62 minutes and 5 seconds, it performs a complete rotation in 12 hours and 25 minutes. The complication can be adjusted using a tide table (available on the internet or from the harbour master’s office), and allows you to see at a glance the status and position of the tide (rising or falling, high or low tide).
Example: Local time is 10:07 am. The tide chart shows high tide at 2.07 pm, four hours after local time. Simply use the push- piece at 2 o’clock to position the tide hand
4 hours before the “high tide” indicator, at 8 o’clock. At 2.07 pm, the tide hand will indicate high tide as shown in the tide table. Once set, the watch requires no further adjustment unless the wearer changes geographical location.
In addition to this information specific to the tide indicatorfunction, the dial features a discreet date aperture at half past four, as well as a small seconds counter at two o’clock. This completes the precision of the minute track that can be read in two ways: one for the minutes, the other for the tide cycle. The hands and hour markers are coated in luminescent material for optimum legibility.
DISTINCTIVE SEAFARING ROOTS
Inspired by the futuristic architecture of stealth ships, the 35th Anniversary Newport Maréographe remains true to the essence of Newport, making this timepiece instantly recognisable: central horns, a wide-berth bezel, and the ship’s wheel engraved on a notched crown. The polished and brushed finish of the 43 mm steel case emphasises its three-faceted outline. The case back, highlighted by a bezel punctuated by six screws evocative of sailing boat winches, is engraved with the words “35ème anniversaire” (35th anniversary).
This new HERBELIN timepiece is water- resistant to 100 metresand is paired with a strap that is rounded in the middle, made from a highly resistant technical textile used for boat rigging. Matching the dial in blue with white topstitching and red bar tacks, it adds the final touch to the model’s sporty-chic design.
Simple to set and easy to use, this timepiece is fitted with a Swiss-made quartz movement (Ronda) that offers an assurance of precision and reliability. It was premièred by the French brand and offers a battery life of 60 months.
Interpreting traditional French watchmaking expertise passed down from father to son for 75 years, the 35th Anniversary Newport Maréographe is Made in France. It is designed, engineered, assembled by hand, adjusted, and inspected at the HERBELIN workshops in the Jura mountains of the Franche-Comté region This watch, a fitting tribute to the Newport collection, is the brand’s first to be equipped with a tide indicator function, helping you predict the tide’s ebbs and flows with reliable accuracy.
35 YEARS OF HISTORY
In the early 1980s, when Jean-Claude Herbelin took over the reins of the company his father founded, he set his sights on launching a new collection that would encapsulate the core values and French watchmaking heritage of the Michel Herbelin brand. The Newport collection honours the family’s passion for sailing and the sea, inspired by the yachts competing in the America’s Cup Race in Newport, Rhode Island, and taking its shape from the portholes of transatlantic yachts. Capturing a spirit of adventure, the Newport charts a course for freedom and far-flung destinations. Thirty-five years on from its creation in 1988, it remains the brand’s number one best-seller. Since its launch, 500,000 Newport watches have been sold. The watch that catapulted HERBELIN onto the international stage tells a beautiful story that is far from reaching its final chapter.. And here to prove it is the 35th Anniversary Newport Maréographe, the first model to feature this watch complication. To be continued…
