Oris introduces race-inspired limited Calobra watches
Oris returns to the Spanish island of Mallorca this year as the title sponsor of the Oris Rally Clásico. The independent Swiss watch company has been involved with the classic car rally since 2012. To celebrate this year’s event, Oris has created two limited-edition Oris Calobra watches, inspired by the dashboards of sports cars from the 1960s and 1970s that take part in the rally.
Oris has close ties with motor sport that go back decades. Today, it produces a series of high-performance sports watches and works with some of the world’s biggest names in racing, including the Williams Team and Audi Sport.
One of the most memorable points in the rally is Sa Calobra, a small coastal village that’s only accessible by a famous mountain pass designed by the Italian engineer Antonio Parietti in 1932. The winding road has some breath-taking corners, including the iconic Nus de sa Corbata (which translates as tie-knot), where the road sweeps round and under itself.
The Oris Calobra Chronograph Limited Edition II and Oris Calobra Day Date Limited Edition II both carry an engraving of the Nus de sa Corbata on the case back and feature a green and white colour scheme lifted from the instrument panels of 1960s and 1970s sports car dashboards. The chronograph hour and minutes sub-dials have been rotated through 270 degrees to mirror the design of speedometers and rev counters, and the movement engineered so the corresponding hands reset to zero between the 8 and 9 o’clock position, where needles sit when a car is idle.
The new watches also have the Artix GT’s Oris-developed ‘good grip’ vulcanised rubber edge on the bi-directional turning ceramic bezel and the perforated leather racing strap and folding clasp.
Each watch will be presented in a limited-edition box and delivered in April 2015.
