The line of Royal Oak selfwinding models acquires additional stature with this new reference featuring an unprecedented size. Its steel case has been enlarged to a 41 mm diameter (previously 39 mm). This case with its decidedly contemporary dimensions nonetheless retains all the attributes that have made the Royal Oak such a legendary modern-day watch collection. The case middle, the bezel, the crown, the bracelet and the folding clasp are all made of steel, like the model that overturned the world of Fine Watchmaking 40 years ago. The subtle interplay of the satin-brushed and polished surfaces that forged the reputation of the first Royal Oak watches is as on-trend as ever, just as the eight hexagonal screws on the octagonal bezel are still in white gold, exactly as they were on the original 1972 model. Water-resistant to 50 metres and equipped with a screw-locked crown, the case is fitted with a glareproofed sapphire crystal and caseback. The bracelet is seamlessly integrated with the case and features the collection’s unmistakable aesthetic, characterised by perfectly assembled links and studs arranged in progressively diminishing order of size. A new Audemars Piguet triple-blade folding clasp distinguished by a double-safety fastening system is making its appearance.
Also typical of this collection, the black dial of this Royal Oak bears a “Grande Tapisserie” pattern that now becomes a signature for all Royal Oak selfwinding models. This motif is crafted by Audemars Piguet using historical machines according to the ramolayé or pounced ornament technique. This process enables simultaneous cutting of squares interspersed with a gridwork pattern of fine grooves. The superimposition of two decorations, which is a unique feature of Royal Oak dials, endows them with incomparable radiance. The applied AP initials appearing just above the logo are more discreet than on the previous 39 mm version. They leave ample room at 12 o’clock for a double hour-marker inspired by the first Royal Oak watches launched in 1972.
This new Royal Oak Selfwinding 41 mm beats to the rhythm of Audemars Piguet Calibre 3120, a mechanical selfwinding movement driving hour, minute and seconds hands as well as a window-type date display. 280-part Calibre 3120 has a 60-hour power reserve and a frequency of 21,600 vibrations/hour (3 Hz). The monobloc oscillating weight is made of 22-carat gold.
A worthy descendant of the first prestige sports watch, this new Royal Oak Selfwinding model with a 41 mm diameter also comes in two other steel versions with a blue or silver-toned dial. This model is also available in pink gold with a choice of black or silver-toned dial, fitted with a pink gold bracelet or a leather strap with AP folding clasp.
