Submersible GMT PAM01495: A Skeletonized tool watch for real-world use

Panerai steadfastly pursues its mission to elevate performance while staying true to its origins, now unveiling a new addition to its Submersible collection. Deeply rooted in its legacy of producing instruments for the Italian Navy, where failure was never an option, Panerai consistently develops timepieces where every design element serves a singular, precise purpose: to deliver uncompromising performance in any adventure. This ethos is perfectly embodied by the new Submersible GMT PAM01495, designed to master the depths. This bold timepiece marries the high-tech P.4001/S calibre with an equally cutting-edge 47mm DMLS titanium case, featuring a fully skeletonized calibre with 50 bar (~500 meters) water resistance: a testament to Panerai’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of watchmaking while remaining faithful to its ‘tool watch’ DNA.

The 47 mm case is produced using Titanium DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering). A pioneer in this field, Panerai was among the first to introduce 3D-printed titanium in watchmaking, with a patent filed as early as 2012. With this new timepiece, Titanium DMLS is used in combination with a skeletonized automatic calibre, further solidifying the Maison’s long-standing mastery of this distinctive material. Panerai’s pioneering work with titanium dates back to 1985, with the introduction of the Mille Metri prototype in titanium, a robust diving watch with a 47 mm titanium case and the iconic crown protecting bridge. Building on this legacy, Panerai officially introduced titanium in his collection in 1998, and has since been guided by an innovative spirit, which led the Maison to explore innovative constructions, such as Titanium DLMS, new coatings like Titanium DLC, and new complex and expressive forms, including the Forged Titanium.

Built layer by layer from Grade 5 titanium powder, this construction allows the creation of internal cavities within the case, significantly reducing weight while maintaining resistance. Compared to standard titanium constructions, Titanium DMLS is approximately 25% lighter, and more than 50% lighter than steel for the same design, while offering high resistance to corrosion — a decisive advantage in marine environments. Finished with a sandblasted surface, the Titanium DMLS case is paired with a titanium bezel fitted with a matte blue ceramic disc.

Animating the PAM01495 is the P.4001/S automatic calibre, an intricate skeletonized movement launched in 2021, boasting 341 components and two patents. Developed for both advanced mechanical function and everyday usability, the movement integrates an innovative and patented polarized date system conceived specifically to address one of the key limitations of open movements. Unlike conventional date discs, which are opaque and obscure the mechanics underneath, Panerai’s polarized date remains virtually invisible across the movement, revealing the date exclusively through the aperture at 3 o’clock. This solution preserves full visibility of the architecture while retaining key information to be displayed.

Enhancing the watch’s functionality, the calibre is equipped with a 12-hour GMT function enriched with an AM/PM indicator, enabling the immediate reading of a second time zone. Panerai’s unwavering commitment to readability is evident in the distinctive orange GMT hand. This vibrant hue was chosen for its exceptional visibility against water and sky, even in challenging conditions, drawing inspiration from its widespread use in marine environments for signal, sailing regatta, and diving buoys. Further underscoring Panerai’s dedication to ease of use, a patented GMT spring allows the local hour hand to jump in one-hour increments, making time adjustments quick and intuitive when travelling. Precision is further reinforced by the seconds reset function, directly inspired by Panerai’s military heritage. This mechanism allows the seconds hand to return to the zero position upon pulling the crown, ensuring accurate and easy synchronization with a reference time signal.

Leveraging Panerai’s expertise in power reserve, the PAM01495 can run autonomously for three days. Energy is supplied by an off-centered micro-rotor, strategically positioned to preserve the movement’s visibility, also reducing the calibre thickness. Two barrels deliver the 72 hours of autonomy, which is conveniently monitored via a sapphire circular indicator on the case back. This placement ensures constant awareness of remaining power reserve and reflects Panerai’s commitment to a functional design that keeps the dial clean and readable, reserving it for essential time-tracking information.

A distinctive grid design further defines the P.4001/S, serving as a direct nod to Panerai’s maritime legacy. This pattern, inspired by the robust military nets that historically secured vessels in harbors, sees its structure reinterpreted within the caliber’s skeletonized architecture. The result is a design that not only reveals the intricate mechanics within but also subtly honors the ingenuity and historical significance of these essential maritime solutions.

This calibre is housed in a construction with water resistance up to 50 bar (~500 meters), a significant achievement for a skeleton movement, allowing divers to go even further on their adventures. This rating is rigorously verified by Panerai’s Laboratorio di Idee through an extensive testing protocol. It begins with comprehensive quality certification, where every single component of the case is meticulously checked before assembly. Before the main water resistance assessment, representative batches of each model undergo extensive laboratory testing that simulate years of real-world use to verify that the design and manufacturing meet the brand’s standards for durability, reliability and long-term performance under extreme conditions. Once the entire watch is assembled (without the strap), it proceeds to a multi-stage water resistance verification. First, a vacuum unit test is performed to prevent damage in case of waterproofness issues.

Subsequently, the watch is immersed in a specialized device filled with water, simulating the indicated pressure plus an additional 25% as a safety factor, and exposed for a specific duration. To confirm absolute dryness, the watch is then heated before cold water is dropped onto the sapphire glass; any internal moisture would instantly become visible. This comprehensive water resistance test, excluding the ageing process, is performed on every individual timepiece, ensuring that the water-resistance of the timepieces is tested with the additional 25% safety factor.

As a complete diving instrument, each component contributes to operational reliability underwater. The unidirectional rotating bezel enables exact control of immersion times, while the applied indexes and hands, treated with Super-LumiNova®, are designed to remain visible in low-light conditions, with the minute hands and bezel dots emitting a blue glow, ensuring immersion time is immediately readable, and all other elements shining in green. The skeletonized construction leaves the movement fully visible, with the indexes applied directly to the rehaut to ensure clear, immediate legibility without compromising function. The sandblasted crown-protective bridge, integral to the Submersible identity, reinforces security.

The new watch is paired with a blue rubber strap and is presented in a deluxe blue cherry wood box, comprising a second bi-material strap in black.

Submersible GMT PAM01495 will be available exclusively in Panerai boutiques from May 2026.
