Tambour Spin Time: Louis Vuitton brings a timeless audacity of colour

The Tambour is one of Louis Vuitton's most emblematic collections — its distinctive case shape and assertive presence give it an identity entirely its own. At its heart, the Spin Time complication marks the passage of time with clarity and intention. Whether at home or abroad, the Tambour Spin Time represents the House’s own mechanical expression of the Art of Travel.

"There are very few watch designs that belong unambiguously to a single House. The Spin Time is one of them. It could only have come from Louis Vuitton,” explains Jean Arnault, Watch Director of Louis Vuitton. "The connection to travel, the audacity of the display, the depth of in-house expertise required to realise it. It is ours in every sense."

Building on the success of the limited-edition models launched in 2025, Louis Vuitton is introducing five Tambour Spin Time references to the permanent collection, each defined by an audacity of colour that marks the next chapter in the story of the iconic Spin Time.

The Art of Travel

Louis Vuitton has been accompanying travel since 1854. Its trunks were built for journeys — for ocean liners and railway carriages, for the particular demands of people who moved through the world with intention and style. That heritage has always informed the House’s watchmaking, but never more directly than in the Spin Time: a complication conceived from the romance of departure itself.

The idea came in 2007, when Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini — the founders of La Fabrique du Temps — designed a new jumping hour complication inspired by the mechanical departure boards found in airports and railway stations the world over.

"Looking up at the departure board, we immediately thought of a jumping hour complication," says Navas. "What we wanted was to take that idea and make it three-dimensional, to give it presence on the wrist. The cube was the answer. Once we had that, everything else followed."

The Tambour Spin Time debuted in 2009 as the first movement developed by La Fabrique du Temps for Louis Vuitton. The Spin Time complication, with its 12 rotating cubes orbiting the dial, immediately established itself as Louis Vuitton's signature horological statement — patented, distinctive, and inseparable from the House’s Art of Travel.

"We wanted a complication with a direct connection to travel, not as a metaphor, but as a mechanical fact. The departure board inspired us precisely because it was functional, not decorative,” explains Barbasini. “That discipline is what we tried to bring to the movement."

A Single Origin

In 2011, La Fabrique du Temps was acquired by Louis Vuitton, marking the genesis of the House’s watchmaking presence in Geneva, ultimately bringing movement, case, and dial production together under one roof.

On the occasion of the Spin Time's tenth anniversary in 2019, Louis Vuitton revisited the concept with the Spin Time Air, excavating the dial to reveal the cubes as if suspended in mid-air, floating freely around the periphery of the movement.

The complication entered a new era in 2025 with the Tambour Spin Time — six limited-edition references built around an entirely new case and a new family of in-house movements. For the first time, every element of the Spin Time, including case, dial, and movement, was conceived and produced entirely in-house at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton.

Built for the Journey

The Tambour case takes its name from the great ceremonial drums of Japan. Slimmer in profile than its predecessor, it features a sandblasted bezel with three-dimensional polished relief lettering. The lugs are separately milled components, their laser-frosted concave flanks contrasting with the brushed case middle in a demonstration of expert joinery. On the dial, the historic 'Fab. en Suisse' designation is a proud declaration of origin.

The new family of manufacture movements brings its own aesthetic codes: micro-sandblasted bridges, polished chamfers, an 18-carat rose gold oscillating weight, and colourless transparent jewels in place of conventional rubies. The LFT seal, engraved on every movement like a stamp in a passport, promises a single origin: La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, Meyrin, Geneva.

“The SpinTime Antipodes allows us to display 24 time zones with only 12 cubes. The brilliant idea is to display opposite time zones on the same cube because it's the same time on both sides of the Earth. The only difference is that one side is day and the other is night. And through a contrast effect, the SpinTime Antipodes informs the user of the AM/PM for each time zone” says Navas.

The result is a complication unlike any other in contemporary watchmaking. The Tambour Spin Time Air Antipode displays all 24 major time zones simultaneously across the 12 cubes, each bearing the names of two cities that are exactly 12 hours apart — antipodes of each other. Los Angeles and Dubai share a cube. New York and Bangkok. Paris and the Midway Islands. Together, 12 cubes span the globe.

"When you are travelling, knowing whether it is day or night in another city is often more useful than knowing the precise hour," says Michel Navas. "That practicality was a guiding principle."

Each cube carries a day-night indication through its background colour. As each city pair reaches its day-night transition, its cube rotates, inverting the relationship.

"Pairing antipodal cities on a single cube was the breakthrough," says Navas. "With this logic, the complication explains itself."

Local time is indicated by a miniature-painted yellow pointer — a deliberate reference to the stitching found on Louis Vuitton's leathergoods. Despite the complexity of the in-house calibre ST12.01, all adjustments are handled simply and intuitively via the crown, a hallmark of the thoughtful engineering behind the integrated Antipode worldtime complication.

The Tambour Spin Time Air Antipode joins the permanent collection in a 42.5 mm white gold case, paired with a dial-matched calfskin strap.
