DESCRIPTION

  • Van Cleef & Arpels pays tribute to Legendary Balls

Following its High Jewellery collection, the Maison creates four precisous timepieces

“An amusement, of aristocratic nature, made up of scenes or appearances that are allegorical, mythological, satirical or burlesque, mingled with music, dance and poetry...”

This is how Prince Jean-Louis de Faucigny-Lucinge, one of the last great socialites of the 20th century, defined the Ball. Yet, is it possible to give a precise meaning to dreams, to parties, to a world of wonders' That is the question. In every language the word Ball conjures the same images: a moment of splendour and harmony. A ball is first of all a prestigious location, a refined setting. It is also the art of elegance, reflected in the attire and costumes of the guests. It is a party, born of one man or woman’s desire to be the host to the most prestigious guests. The ball then becomes a fabulous showcase for adornment, an occasion to reveal and celebrate precious jewels and rare gems. There is nowhere better than France to find the most sophisticated illustrations of this magical word. French king Louis XIV codified its practises for the sumptuous Bals Parés that were given at Versailles. Marie-Antoinette instigated a lighter version when she escaped under cover of a mask to go dancing in Paris, at the Bals de l’Opéra. During the Second Empire, the ball adapted to the sensual undulations of the waltz and its swirling crinolines. In the 20th century, the ball becomes a moment of extreme refinement. It is often in costume. During the weeks preceding it, guests will think of little else than their outfits that are increasingly sophisticated.

Van Cleef & Arpels has chosen to renew this very French and very Parisian tradition of the Ball. The new High Watchmaking collection, Bals de Légende, presents four precious timepieces, inspired by extraordinary 20th century balls. Each tells the story of an unforgettable evening. So let yourself gracefully dance through time stopping in imperial Russia, dazzling Paris, romantic Venice and audacious New York.

    Bal Black & White

    New York, November 28, 1966

The writer, Truman Capote, gave this ball to mark his literary success. He has decided to celebrate his moment of glory by inviting “the 500 most famous people in the world”. They have all adapted their attire to the dress code and theme of the party: “Black & White”. Everything was black and white that 28th of April 1966 evening in the ballroom of New York’s Plaza Hotel.
