  • Van Cleef & Arpels

Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2011

    The Poetry of Time™

Skies of turquoise enamel, waves and clouds in mother-of-pearl, animals with coats set in diamonds, flowers of rubies, leaves of emeralds… the most precious materials ennoble high-precision movements, giving time a poetic dimension that is unique to Van Cleef & Arpels.

In these watches that tell a story, every stage of production has undergone an extraordinary change. Each watch requires hundreds of hours of work, with the virtuoso skills of the master watchmakers enhanced by enamellers, stone-cutters and sometimes even by jewellers. It is their complementary expertise that makes it possible to create these models, these poems of watchmaking.

In these exceptional timepieces, the minutes and hours that pass are the constantly repeated symbols of a time that is charged with emotion and intimate memories. Van Cleef & Arpels explores this time in its two collections, Poetic ComplicationsTM and Extraordinary Dials, and in its High Jewellery watches.

    Five Weeks in a Balloon
«How beautiful it all is’ cried Joe, as the balloon flew over the straits of Zanzibar. Kennedy was also looking and didn’t have enough eyes to see it all.»

    «Five Weeks in a Balloon», Jules Verne

Poetic Complication Five Weeks in a Balloon

For this SIHH 2011, Van Cleef & Arpels has decided to spend a little longer on one of the Voyages Extraordinaires of Jules Verne. However, when setting off to see the world from the air it is advisable to take ones time. It would be out of the question to use the fast and noisy methods of transport of today.

It is on board a balloon that we invite you to take your place. It is a dirigible balloon identical to the one in which Samuel Fergusson, Dick Kennedy and their servant, Joe, the imaginary heroes of Jules Verne, flew in 1863, the year in which the novel «Five Weeks in a Balloon» was published.

The case of this exceptional watch is in white gold which can be set with brilliant- or baguette-cut diamonds. The dial is decorated with champlevé enamel and mother-of-pearl inlays. At its centre, a balloon has just lifted off from the island of Zanzibar. It is rising slowly into the air above the narrow strip of sea that separates this island in the Indian Ocean from the coast of Africa.

The mechanical movement JLC 846 is equipped with a unique retrograde module specially developed for Van Cleef & Arpels. A retrograde minute is indicated by the balloon’s anchor. Positioned on the right of the dial, it descends from zero at the top to sixty at the bottom, then returns to its starting point at the end of the sixtieth minute. The hours are indicated on the left of the dial by a bird in flight that moves upwards, returning to start again after twelve hours.

Beyond the technical feat, this special use of complications gives meaning to Van Cleef & Arpels time. The anchor is a symbol of stability, retaining the memory of a precious moment fixed in The Poetry of Time. The flying bird is a symbol of hope: hope that this precious moment will arrive, or hope for renewal in permanent movement.

The crafts involved in The Poetry of Time

    Poetic Complications
Van Cleef & Arpels gives to time a rare dimension, that possibility to dream. In its watches, technical expertise is firmly linked to artistic creativity. The complications, those high-performance mechanisms that enhance the watch movement, are not only masterpieces of precision, they are designed with specific style codes in an architecture that is subtle and elegant.

These marvels of watchmaking, born in Swiss workshops, become precious emotional moments. Worn on the wrist or offered as a gift, they tell an intimate story, recapturing a moment of happiness written in the poetry of time.

The Aghenor workshop of Jean-Marc Wiederrecht is responsible for Le Pont des Amoureux, a watch with a poetic complication that was awarded the Ladies’ Watch Prize  at the Grand Prix Horloger de Genève 2010. The dial of this watch has been created by Dominique Baron.
